In 1990 I went overnight-hiking in the mountains and at night I awoke to strange lights and sounds outside my tent. I rushed out but by the time I was out it was all quiet and dark again. I looked around with my flashlight and noticed the ground was steaming about 30 yards from my tent. I went over there and the ground was hot as an oven. There were three round burns about as big as dinner plates arranged in a triangle that was about 10 feet across. I went back to sleep and hiked
out at first light just in case they would be back.
